iTunes Match 4001 error

Shot of Apples ITunes Match info on Apple's site.

I hear that lots of people have been having very frustrating problems with iTunes Match. Some of my friends across the pond tell me that they have managed to upload their music but, after turning iTunes Match on and trying to access their music library they have had error messages they can’t get past, try as they might. How very annoying!

iTunes Match 4001 error seems to be the most common, but error 4002 is also cropping up, among others. I haven’t experienced any problems myself and have been merrily using iTunes Match, but apparently many complaints have been made to Apple and their engineers are said to be “working on it” (but they’ve been doing so for some time).

Whilst we wait for Apple to sort this out, here’s a possible solution to the problem that seems to have worked for a lot of people. Try this if you get the iTunes Match 4001 error (or any other, for that matter):

Open iTunes and click the Store tab on the menu bar.

Hold down the Option Key (⌥) and at the same time click ‘Turn Off iTunes Match’.

Click Store on the menu again, then click ‘Turn on iTunes Match’ (but don’t hold down anything this time, just click it).

And that’s about it! It probably won’t work for everyone but it’s certainly worth a try because I’ve had feedback that it has worked for some and has been air-punching and cries of “Yes” late at night in several states.

I hope it works for you! Drop me a line if it does. I love happy endings. Bonne chance!

    Hi Cesar,

Glad this fix still works, and thanks for taking the time to comment.

It did not work for me, still having the same error.

    Any other advise?

    Hi Flavio,

Sorry this didn’t work for you. As I said in my post, it doesn’t work for everyone. Depends what version of OS X you’re using etc. etc. I’ll see if I can come up with something else in the next few days.

I am getting this message and I don’t have iTunes Match. Is there an alternative solution?

      Hi David,

Could you let me know exactly what you were trying to do at the time, what operating system you have and which version of iTunes?

I was having error 4001 when updating Genius.
If you follow the Jane’s instructions above, except instead of ‘Turn off iTunes Match’, do Option-click on ‘Turn off Genius’, it deletes your Genius library and then you can turn it back on to rebuild it.
I have approx 62,000 songs in iTunes 12.3 and it took two goes at this and it worked. Cheers!

    N.B. It’s Shift-click for Windows users.
